Google Shopping CSS fee models explained
Understand Google Shopping CSS fee models, compare percentage, retainer and per-click charges, and check service scope before requesting quotes.
What to take away
- A Comparison Shopping Service (CSS) bids for Google Shopping ad slots on your behalf. You can also buy those slots directly through Google Ads.
- Examples discussed include Productcaster, Shoptimised, GoDataFeed, DataFeedWatch, Feedonomics, Kelkoo and idealo; confirm each one's UK CSS role before comparing providers.
- Fees varymonthly plans, custom quotes, or cost per click.
- Feed quality and exit terms often matter more than a small gap in the headline rate.
- Cheapest per click is not the same as cheapest per sale.
How a CSS sits between a retailer and Google
A Comparison Shopping Service is an intermediary. It buys Shopping ad inventory and resells that exposure to retailers. It belongs to the wider family of comparison shopping websites, which sell visibility rather than stock.
The retailer normally keeps its product feed and its advertising account. The CSS runs or advises on the campaigns, or supplies a self-serve platform with a support desk.
Google Shopping ads are auctioned in real time, and a CSS is one more bidder in that auction. CSS partners cover paid placements only. Free listings sit outside the arrangement, so it is worth knowing how free Shopping listings compare with paid ads before you move budget.
CSS fee models and what to check
The table lists fee models, not like-for-like prices. Check current rates and confirm that each named service is a UK Google Shopping CSS partner before treating it as a comparable provider.

What the fees mean for a £6,000 monthly spend
Take a merchant spending £6,000 a month on Shopping ads across 150,000 clicks. A 15% share of spend costs £900 a month, or £10,800 a year. A flat retainer of £1,200 a month costs £14,400 a year. A margin of 0.6p a click costs £900 a month, or £10,800 a year.
Fee models at £6,000 monthly spend
- £900monthly cost at 15% share
- £10,800annual cost at 15% share
- £1,200monthly flat retainer
- £14,400annual flat retainer
At this volume the percentage and per-click models land in the same place. Scale the budget and they separate. A percentage fee rises with every extra pound of media. A fixed margin per click does not.
Quotes arrive in different units, so convert them before comparing. Ask each shortlisted partner to price the same 12-month plan using your own figures. Watch for onboarding charges and any minimum monthly fee.
Four checks before you sign with a CSS
- Audit the feed first. Ask how the partner handles disapproved products and who fixes them.
- Get the fee formula in writing, including the minimum term and what happens when spend falls.
- Run a 60-day trial on one campaign. Compare cost per acquisition, not just cost per click.
- Check the exit. Confirm who owns the campaign history and whether the feed can be moved.
Feed tooling sits underneath all of this. If you sell on WooCommerce, our WooCommerce product feed plugin buyer's guide explains which plugins cover the attributes Google asks for.
One more check sits outside the contract. The prices you advertise remain your responsibility. The Committee of Advertising Practice codes, enforced by the Advertising Standards Authority, require price claims in UK ads to be accurate and not misleading.
Contract terms that decide the real cost
Headline fees are only part of the bill. An annually indexed retainer, a 12-month minimum term or a 90-day notice period each change the total cost. None of them appears in a rate card.
Ask what happens if you pause spend for a season, and who owns the campaign history if you leave. A partner that will not put those answers in the contract is a risk, however keen the pricing.
Common questions
Do I need a CSS to run Google Shopping ads in the UK?
No. You can buy Shopping ads directly through your own Google Ads account. A CSS is an optional layer that adds management, and sometimes different pricing.
How much do UK CSS partners charge?
Rates vary. Productcaster and Feedonomics quote custom fees. Shoptimised, GoDataFeed and DataFeedWatch publish monthly plans. Kelkoo and idealo charge cost per click. Compare quotes on your own spend and click volumes.
Can I switch partner later?
Usually yes. The new partner takes over campaign management while your feed and ad account stay with you. Contracts differ, so check the notice period and any exit fee before signing.
Does a CSS change my product feed?
Not the file itself. The partner may ask for extra attributes or a subfeed, but the core feed requirements do not change.
